D4599-21 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Principle and Operation of Length-of-Stain Dosimeters

ASTM D4599-21 defines the standard practice for the detection and measurement of Time Weighted Average (TWA) concentrations of toxic gases and vapors using length-of-stain colorimetric dosimeter tubes. These passive devices work strictly by diffusional sampling. A typical dosimeter is a sealed glass tube containing a bed of granulated material impregnated with a reactive chemical sensitive to a specific target gas.

To begin sampling, one end of the tube is opened. The target gas, if present, diffuses into the tube and reacts with the chemical reagent, causing a distinct and progressive color change (the “stain”) along the length of the carrier material. Because the tube functions purely by diffusion, no auxiliary sampling, test, nor analysis equipment is needed. The results are immediately available by visually measuring the length of the stain and the time of exposure to directly derive the TWA concentration.

💡 Intrinsic Safety: Since length-of-stain dosimeters have no moving parts and require no electrical power, they are inherently safe for use in flammable or combustible atmospheres where electronic pumps could present an ignition hazard. This makes them extremely simple to use and very cost effective.

⚙️ Regulatory Framework and Applicable Standards

This practice is designed to support compliance with workplace air quality regulations, specifically the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard 29 CFR 1910.1000, Subpart Z, which designates permissible exposure limits for toxic substances. The practice is also relevant to similar international regulations. The scope (Section 1) notes that a partial list of detectable gases is provided in Appendix X1, but this list should be considered neither absolute nor complete.

All values stated in this standard are in SI units. Users of the standard are reminded of their responsibility to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices prior to use. For definitions of terms used in this practice, users should refer to ASTM Terminology D135
