D4551-22 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D4551-22, under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D20 on Plastics and Subcommittee D20.24 on Plastic Building Products, specifies requirements for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) flexible concealed water-containment membrane. Originally approved in 1986, this edition was approved in 2022, replacing D4551-17. The standard covers sheeting used without mastic or coating for critical wet installations like fountains, pools, planters, shower pans, and similar concealed applications.

📐 Scope and Material Requirements

The specification covers PVC flexible sheeting for water-containment membranes in concealed applications where long-term reliability is essential. According to the standard, “Recycled materials may be used in this product in accordance with the requirements in Section 5.” The tests are intended to ensure quality and performance, not for design purposes, and are conducted primarily with liquids that simulate the service environment. The standard does not cover membranes exposed to ultraviolet light.

⚙️ Test Procedures and Conditions

Conditioning per D618 is required. Key test methods include D374/D374M for thickness, D412 for tensile properties, D1004 for tear resistance, D543 for chemical resistance, and E96/E96M for water vapor transmission. Tests are selected to simulate real-world conditions for concealed membranes.
