D454-04 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Test Scope and Significance

ASTM D454-04 (Reapproved 2019), formally titled “Standard Test Method for Rubber Deterioration by Heat and Air Pressure,” is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D11 and has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense. This test method specifies a procedure to determine the influence of elevated temperature and air pressure on the physical properties of vulcanized rubber. The standard explicitly states that the results of this test may not give an exact correlation with service performance since performance conditions vary widely. It is intended to evaluate rubber compounds on a laboratory comparison basis and is most applicable to performance under conditions of increased temperature and air pressure. Per Section 1.2, the values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.

⚠️ Safety and Responsibility: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

⚙️ Standard Procedures and Material Preparation

Per the Summary of Test Method, specimens of vulcanized rubber are exposed to the deteriorating influence of air at specified elevated temperature and pressure for known periods of time. After this exposure, their physical properties are determined and compared with the properties determined on the original specimens and the changes noted. Unless otherwise specified, the determination of physical properties must be carried out in accordance with Test Methods D412. Furthermore, the requirements of Practices D3182 and D3183 shall be complied with and are made a part of this test method. In case of conflict between the provisions of this standard and those of a detailed specification for a particular material, the latter takes precedence.
