D4530-15 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🔬 Purpose and Scope of the Micro Carbon Residue Test

ASTM D4530-15 (Reapproved 2020) specifies a micro method for determining the carbon residue formed after evaporation and pyrolysis of petroleum materials. This test provides an indication of the relative coke-forming tendency and is equivalent to the Conradson Carbon Residue test (D189).

Applicable to petroleum products that partially decompose on distillation at atmospheric pressure, it is validated for carbon residue values ranging from 0.10 % to 30 % (m/m).

🟦 Parameter 📏 Specification / Value
Designation D4530 −15 (Reapproved 2020)
Equivalent Test D189 (Conradson Carbon Residue)
Validated Residue Range 0.10 % to 30 % (m/m)
Low Residue Pre-Treatment Distill to remove 90 % (V/V) of flask charge
Bottoms Tested 10 % (V/V) remaining after distillation
