The ASTM D4514-12 standard, designated as “Standard Specification for Friction Tape,” is issued under the fixed designation D4514 and covers friction tapes commonly used for protecting and binding insulation applied to joints of electrical wires and cables, as well as for other mechanical purposes. The standard is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D09 on Electrical and Electronic Insulating Materials and references Test Methods D69 for testing and Terminology D1711 for definitions. Values are stated in inch-pound units as standard.
Friction tapes shall consist of a woven fabric sheeting impregnated with an adhesive insulating compound, cut into rolls of narrow width and wound on a core. The fabric must be evenly and firmly woven, free of unsightly defects, knots, lumps, and irregularities, with threads running as straight as possible to minimize raveling. The frictioning compound must be a tacky adhesive that does not deteriorate copper or other metals. The fabric must be thoroughly impregnated and evenly covered on both sides, with compound adhering firmly without leaving bare spots when layers are separated.
The standard includes nominal dimensions and permissible variations in Table 2, measured by Test Methods D69. Performance requirements from Table 1 include dielectric strength and tensile strength. Representative data is shown below:
| 🟦 Nominal Width (in) | 📐 Tolerance (in) | 📏 Nominal Thickness (in) | 🎯 Tolerance (in) | ⚡ Length (ft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 (0.500) | ±0.032 | 0.010 | ±0.002 | 60 |
| 3/4 (0.750) | ±0.032 | 0.010 | ±0.002 | 60 |
| 1 (1.000) | ±0.032 | 0.010 | ±0.002 | 60 |
| 🔍 Property | ⚡ Requirement | 📌 Test Method |
|---|---|---|
| Dielectric Breakdown Voltage | ≥ 1.0 kV minimum | D69 |
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 20 lb/in width | D69 |
| Adhesion (Bare Spots) | None permitted | D69 |
Testing must be in accordance with Test Methods D69 for conditioning, sampling, and measurements. Inspection of the material is agreed upon between the purchaser and the seller as part of the purchase contract. If required, the tape shall be tested and inspected either at the place of manufacture prior to shipment or at the place of delivery within four weeks from the date of delivery. The purchaser reserves the right to reject any part of the shipment that does not comply with Section 11 of this specification.
This specification covers friction tapes used for protecting and binding insulation applied to joints of electrical wires and cables, as well as for other mechanical purposes.
Friction tape consists of a woven fabric sheeting impregnated with an adhesive insulating compound, cut into rolls and wound on a core.
Tapes are tested per Test Methods D69 for dielectric breakdown voltage, tensile strength, and adhesion, with specific requirements from Table 1 of the standard.
The frictioning compound must not have a deteriorating effect on copper. Discoloration tests can be performed if specified by the purchaser in accordance with Test Methods D69.
