ASTM D4485 – 24, officially titled Standard Specification for Performance of Active API Service Category Engine Oils, serves as the definitive reference for engine oil performance criteria under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants (specifically Subcommittee D02.B0 on Automotive Lubricants). Originally approved in 1985, the current edition was approved in July 2024 and published in October 2024. This standard replaces the previous edition (D4485 – 22ε1) and incorporates revisions through all ASTM Test Monitoring Center Information Letters up to No. 24-1.
The scope of the specification explicitly covers engine oils employed in light-duty and heavy-duty internal combustion engines. These applications span a diverse range of operating conditions in automobiles, trucks, vans, buses, and off-highway farm, industrial, and construction equipment. The document governs only those API Service Categories that are currently active and have been formally defined through the ASTM consensus process.
The API designation system is expressly open-ended. As the industry defines new sets of performance characteristics tied to evolving engine technology, ASTM assigns new API designations. Many previously defined categories have been rendered obsolete and are explicitly excluded from this specification. The following table summarizes the rationale for their exclusion:
| 🟦 API Category | 📐 Reason for Exclusion from D4485 – 24 |
|---|---|
| SA | Did not specify any engine performance testing requirements. |
| SH | Category could not be licensed for gasoline engine oil use in the API Service Symbol after December 2, 2010. |
| SB, SC, SD, SE, SF, SG & CA, CB, CC, CD, CD-II, CE, CF, CF-2, CF-4, CG-4 | All test methods are obsolete. Critical engine parts, specific test fuels, or standardized reference oils are no longer available. |
Information on these older categories and their obsolete test requirements can be found in detail within SAE J183. Furthermore, the ASTM 5-Car and Sequence VI Procedures, which defined the “Energy Conserving” and “Energy Conserving II” categories, are also formally obsolete and have been deleted from this specification.
D4485-24 integrates seamlessly with several key industry quality frameworks. Candidate oil testing programs are required to be conducted in accordance with the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Petroleum Additives Product Approval Code of Practice. The standard also acknowledges specifications from organizations beyond the direct ASTM consensus process, including ILSAC, API (SM, SN, SP), and ACEA, which are included in the Appendixes for comprehensive informational purposes.
| ⚡ Organization | 🎯 Relevant Standards/Categories | 📏 Role in the Lubricant Ecosystem |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM | D4485, D02.B0 | Consensus-based definition of fundamental engine oil performance. |
| API | SM, SN, SP | Licensing, certification, and the API Service Symbol “Donut”. |
| ILSAC | GF-6 | Fuel economy, resource conservation, and enhanced deposit control. |
| ACEA | European Oil Sequences | Performance requirements specific to European engine designs. |
It provides the standardized, consensus-based specification for the performance requirements of active API Service Category engine oils. It establishes the benchmark that allows engine builders to make consistent lubricant recommendations and suppliers to identify products for specific applications.
These categories are explicitly excluded from D4485-24. SH cannot be licensed after 2010, and the test methods for categories from SB–SG and CA–CG-4 are obsolete because the necessary engine hardware, fuel formulations, and reference oils are no longer procurable. Using them risks severe performance gaps in modern engines.
D4485 focuses on defining performance tests through the ASTM consensus process. Other specifications from API (e.g., the API 1509 licensing rules) and ILSAC (e.g., GF-6 fuel economy requirements) build upon or supplement these tests. D4485 includes these in its appendices for informational context but strictly governs the core ASTM-defined tests.
The ASTM Test Monitoring Center (www.astmtmc.org, 203 Armstrong Drive, Freeport, PA) issues Information Letters to formally update specification requirements. This current edition, D4485-24, incorporates all revisions up to and including Information Letter No. 24-1.
