D448-12 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D448-12 (Reapproved 2022) is a standard classification that defines aggregate size number designations and standard size ranges for mechanical sieve analyses of coarse aggregate and screenings used in highway and bridge construction. This classification covers aggregate sizes for road and bridge construction. Contract documents may specify certain aggregate sizes for specific uses. The standard designates SI units as standard, and sieve sizes conform to ASTM E11. The text includes notes and footnotes for explanatory purposes but are not considered requirements.

⚙️ Standard Sizes and Manufacture

Standard aggregate sizes are manufactured by separating raw material into desired size ranges. Blending two or more components is permissible. The sizes must conform to Table 1 for the specified size number. Conformance is determined using laboratory sieves with square openings per Specification E11.

Table 1 below provides standard aggregate size numbers and their corresponding sieve requirements as per ASTM D448.
