ASTM D4465−05 (Reapproved 2021) defines the performance requirements for zippers intended as fly closures in dungarees, jeans, and work trousers. The standard specifically targets garments constructed from heavy denim or durable fabrics weighing approximately 475 g/m² (14 oz/yd²). This performance specification was developed in cooperation with the Slide Fastener Association, Inc., ensuring industry-wide relevance and practicality.

While the primary application focuses on heavyweight textiles, Section 1.2 acknowledges that zippers meeting this specification may also be satisfactory for lighter weight materials. However, careful consideration must be given to the zipper size and slider type to avoid adverse effects on the appearance of the zipper installation area.
