ASTM D4363-22 is a standard specification for thermoplastic chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) jacket compounds used as an outer covering for electrical cables. These materials are designed for cables installed at temperatures above –35 °C, with values stated in inch-pound units as standard. This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization.
The specification covers CPE compounds suitable for jacket applications on electrical cables. Refer to ASTM D1711 for terminology definitions, including key terms like “aging.” The standard is intended for cables used in various environments, with optional sunlight and weather resistance requirements.
Thermoplastic jackets must conform to physical property requirements in Table 1. For single-conductor non-shielded cables rated 2001 to 5000 V, additional requirements for surface resistivity and U-bend discharge apply per Table 2.
| 📏 Property | 🎯 Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, min | 1500 psi (10.3 MPa) |
| Ultimate Elongation, min | 250% |
| Heat Distortion at 121°C, max | 10% |
| Oil Immersion, change in tensile, max | ±30% |
Testing must be performed according to ASTM D2633. Sample the jacket as per the same standard.
If sunlight and weather resistance are required, the jacket must conform to Table 3 requirements. Testing is performed using Practices D1499 and G153 with carbon-arc exposure.
| 📏 Exposure Condition | 🎯 Requirement |
|---|---|
| Carbon-arc exposure, 720 hours | No visible cracking or crazing |
| Tensile strength retention, min | 85% of original |
| Elongation retention, min | 80% of original |
The standard covers thermoplastic CPE compounds for use as jackets on electrical cables, suitable for installation above -35°C.
Key properties include tensile strength, elongation, heat distortion, and oil immersion resistance as per Table 1.
Sunlight resistance is tested per ASTM D1499 and G153 using carbon-arc exposure for 720 hours, with no cracking and retention of properties.
Primary test methods are from ASTM D2633 for physical properties and ASTM D1499/G153 for sunlight resistance.
