The ASTM D4362-19 standard provides thermophysical property tables for propane, essential for process design and operations. These tables, developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) using REFPROP version 10.0, cover properties from 90 K to 600 K at pressures up to 20 MPa. The standard includes tables for saturation properties and properties along isobars, all in SI units.
The thermophysical property tables for propane are used in calculating the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT), thermodynamic, and transport properties of propane for process design and operations. Two tables provide properties at the conditions of liquid-vapor equilibrium (saturation properties), one for liquid and one for vapor, at temperatures between 90 K and the critical point, 380 K. A third table provides properties at selected T, p points for the equilibrium phase at temperatures between 90 K and 600 K at pressures to 20 MPa. These tables apply only to pure gaseous propane but may also be used in mathematical models and tables for the thermophysical properties of mixtures containing propane.
| 🟦 Symbol | 📏 Property | 📐 Unit |
|---|---|---|
| T | Temperature | K |
| ρ | Molar density | mol·L-1 |
| H | Molar enthalpy | J·mol-1 |
| S | Molar entropy | J·K-1·mol-1 |
| Cv | Constant volume molar heat capacity | J·K-1·mol-1 |
| Cp | Constant pressure molar heat capacity | J·K-1·mol-1 |
| c | Speed of sound | m·s-1 |
| η | Viscosity | µPa·s |
| λ | Thermal conductivity | mW·m-1·K-1 |
Three tables are provided: Thermophysical Properties of Propane Liquid at Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium (Table 1), Vapor at Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium (Table 2), and Along Isobars (Table 3). The tabulated thermophysical properties include molar density, enthalpy, entropy, constant volume and constant pressure heat capacities, speed of sound, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. The symbols and units are as defined in the specification, and a wide selection of units is available with the REFPROP program.
Technical Note: The tables were generated using the NIST Standard Reference Database 23, REFPROP version 10.0. This software allows access to additional properties and unit conversions beyond those listed.
Important: The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. The molar mass of propane is 44.096 g/mol.
The reference state for thermodynamic properties follows the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR): enthalpy H = 200 J/g and entropy S = 1 J/(g·K) for the saturated liquid at 273.15 K (0 °C). These reference states are required to calculate enthalpy and entropy from an equation of state formulation. The tables were developed from a Standard Reference Database product REFPROP, version 10.0, by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
🔍 What is the reference state for enthalpy and entropy? The reference state is defined at the saturated liquid condition at 273.15 K (0 °C), with enthalpy H = 200 J/g and entropy S = 1 J/(g·K).
💡 What software was used to develop the tables? The tables were developed using the NIST Standard Reference Database 23, REFPROP version 10.0, which provides equations for thermodynamic and transport properties.
⚡ What is the temperature and pressure range for the tables? Saturation tables cover 90 K to 380 K (critical point), while isobar tables extend from 90 K to 600 K at pressures up to 20 MPa.
📌 What is the molar mass of propane? The molar mass of propane is specified as 44.096 g/mol in the standard.
