ASTM D4318-17, the Standard Test Methods for Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity Index of Soils, establishes the standardized procedures for determining the Atterberg limits of cohesive soils. These limits—the liquid limit (LL), plastic limit (PL), and shrinkage limit (SL)—distinguish the boundaries of the several consistency states of plastic soils. The tests are performed only on the soil fraction passing the 425-µm (No. 40) sieve, as the contribution of the coarser fraction must be evaluated separately for the overall sample.
The standard provides a robust choice of specimen preparation and testing protocols based on project requirements. For specimen preparation, Procedure 1 (Wet Preparation, Section 11.1) and Procedure 2 (Dry Preparation, Section 11.2) are available. For the liquid limit, Method A (Multipoint, Sections 12 and 13) and Method B (One-Point, Sections 14 and 15) are defined. The plastic limit is determined using either Hand Rolling (Procedure 1) or a Rolling Device (Procedure 2). Per Sections 1.2 and 1.3, the Wet Preparation procedure and Method A are the mandatory defaults when no specific procedure is directed by the requesting authority.
The selection of the correct preparation and testing method is critical for compliance. The table below summarizes the available options derived directly from the scope of D4318-17.
| 🟦 Test Component | 📏 Default Procedure | 🎯 Alternative Procedure | 📐 Key Specification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specimen Preparation | Wet Preparation (Proc. 1) | Dry Preparation (Proc. 2) | Passes 425-µm (No. 40) sieve |
| Liquid Limit (LL) | Method A – Multipoint | Method B – One-Point | Flow curve at 25 blows |
| Plastic Limit (PL) | Hand Rolling (Proc. 1) | Rolling Device (Proc. 2) | Thread cracks at 3.2 mm diameter |
