ASTM D4317-16 (Reapproved 2023) provides a comprehensive specification for polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and PVAc copolymer resin emulsion adhesives. This standard is widely used by manufacturers and specifiers in the woodworking and assembly industries to classify adhesives into three distinct performance levels based on their water resistance. It serves as a modern replacement for Federal Specification MMM-A-180C, Class B, which itself superseded MMM-A-193C.
This specification covers adhesives intended for bonding wood, wood-based substrates, and plastic laminates. It is important to note that it does not apply to polyvinyl-based adhesives designed for bonding flexible films. The adhesives are distinctly classified into three performance levels strictly according to their water resistance (see Section 5 and Table X1.1 of the standard for specific exposure conditions and typical end products).
| 🧪 Test Parameter | 📏 Section | 📐 Standard Method |
|---|---|---|
| Viscosity | 9.1.1 | ASTM D1084 / D2556 |
| Density | 9.1.2 | ASTM D1875 |
| Nonvolatile Content | 9.1.3 | ASTM D1490 |
| pH | 9.1.4 | ASTM E70 |
The standard outlines rigorous tests for evaluating the strength and durability of adhesive bonds. Two primary shear tests are specified, each designed to simulate different service conditions. The Block Shear Test (Compression Loading) utilizes ASTM D905, while the Plywood Shear Test (Tension Loading) follows ASTM D906.
| ⚡ Test Method | 📐 Standard | 🎯 Application |
|---|---|---|
| Block Shear (Compression) | ASTM D905 | Strength properties of adhesive bonds in shear |
| Plywood Shear (Tension) | ASTM D906 | Strength properties of adhesives in plywood construction |
A cornerstone of D4317-16 is its classification of adhesives based on water resistance. The standard defines three performance levels, moving beyond the older federal specification to include modern, more water-resistant formulations. Expected exposure conditions for each class are detailed in Section 5, and typical end products for each performance level are listed in Appendix Table X1.1.
This standard replaces Federal Specification MMM-A-180C, Class B, which itself superseded MMM-A-193C.
The specification covers PVAc emulsion adhesives suitable for use on wood, wood-based substrates, and plastic laminates.
Adhesives are classified into three distinct performance levels based on their water resistance characteristics.
The standard specifies tests for Viscosity (9.1.1), Density (9.1.2), Nonvolatile Content (9.1.3), and pH (9.1.4).
