This standard, designated as ASTM D4313-22, specifies crosslinked chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) compounds for use as jackets on electrical cables. It covers three service categories: general-purpose, heavy-duty, and extra-heavy-duty. The jacket materials are not recommended for installation below –25 °C. All values are in inch-pound units, with SI equivalents for reference.
The specification applies to outer coverings for electrical cables requiring durability and resistance to environmental stress. It is important to note that these compounds are crosslinked, providing enhanced thermal and mechanical properties. Testing and sampling must follow ASTM D470 methods.
Crosslinked jackets must meet the physical property requirements detailed in Table 1. Tensile strength and elongation are tested initially and after oil immersion, using specific fluids per product standards.
| 🟦 Property | 📏 General-Purpose | 📐 Heavy-Duty | 🎯 Extra-Heavy-Duty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, min (psi) | 1500 | 1800 | 2000 |
| Elongation at Rupture, min (%) | 250 | 200 | 180 |
| Oil Immersion – Tensile Retention (%) | 70 | 70 | 70 |
| Oil Immersion – Elongation Retention (%) | 60 | 60 | 60 |
The values shown are representative; consult the full standard for exact requirements.
When specified, jackets must pass sunlight and weather resistance tests according to Table 2. Use accelerated weathering apparatus as per ASTM D1499 and G153, with performance criteria for tensile and elongation retention.
| 🟦 Exposure Condition | ⚡ Performance Requirement |
|---|---|
| 720 hours accelerated weathering | Tensile strength retention ≥ 60% |
| 720 hours accelerated weathering | Elongation retention ≥ 50% |
It covers crosslinked CPE jackets for general-purpose, heavy-duty, and extra-heavy-duty service on electrical cables.
In Table 1 of the standard, including tensile strength and elongation after oil immersion.
Installation is not recommended below –25 °C as stated in the scope.
Following ASTM D470 methods, with accelerated exposure per D1499 and G153, per Table 2 requirements.
