ASTM D4097-19 provides the definitive standard specification for contact-molded, glass-fiber-reinforced thermoset resin corrosion-resistant tanks. This specification covers cylindrical tanks fabricated by contact molding specifically for above-ground vertical installation. Their primary purpose is to contain aggressive chemicals at atmospheric pressure, constructed using commercial-grade polyester or vinyl ester resins. The standard establishes critical requirements for materials, properties, design, construction, dimensions, tolerances, workmanship, and appearance.
It is vital to understand the scope limitations. This standard explicitly does not cover the design of vessels intended for pressure above atmospheric or under vacuum conditions, except as otherwise classified within the document. It also excludes vessels intended for use with liquids heated above their flash points. All values stated in inch-pound units are regarded as standard, with values in parentheses provided for information purposes only.
Fabrication must strictly adhere to the contact molding process, with laminates conforming to Specification C582 for Contact-Molded Reinforced Thermosetting Plastic (RTP) Laminates. Performance verification relies heavily on a suite of referenced ASTM test methods. Barcol hardness testing per D2583 is the primary non-destructive method for assessing the adequacy of the resin cure on the laminate surface. The chemical resistance of the resin system for the intended aggressive service must be evaluated in accordance with Practice C581.
The following table summarizes the essential test methods referenced in D4097-19 for laminate qualification and quality assurance:
| 🟦 Standard | 📏 Test Method / Property | 🎯 Specific Application in D4097 |
|---|---|---|
| C581 | Chemical Resistance | Evaluates resin suitability for the intended corrosive environment |
| D2583 | Barcol Hardness | Primary field assessment for verifying proper resin cure |
| D638 | Tensile Properties | Determines laminate ultimate tensile strength for design verification |
| D790 | Flexural Properties | Measures flexural modulus and strength of the laminate |
| D2584 | Ignition Loss | Quantifies the glass fiber reinforcement content in the cured laminate |
Section 1.4 of the standard imposes specific mandatory design review conditions. Special design consideration shall be given to tanks subject to external environmental and/or mechanical forces such as seismic, wind, ice, agitation, or fluid dynamic forces. Similarly, operational service temperatures exceeding 180°F (82°C) and tanks with unsupported bottoms fall outside standard design assumptions and require a specific, heightened level of engineering analysis.
The table below outlines the primary design parameters and their general application limits as defined by the standard:
| 📐 Design Parameter | ⚡ General Specification Limit | ⚠️ Triggers for Special Review |
|---|---|---|
| Operating Pressure | Atmospheric | All pressure and vacuum service applications |
