D4007-22 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide
📐 Scope, Accuracy, and Standard Designation
Designation D4007-22, formally known as API MPMS Chapter 10.3, defines the laboratory centrifuge procedure for determining water and sediment in crude oils. It is a joint standard under the jurisdiction of ASTM D02 and the API Committee on Petroleum Measurement. Despite its widespread use, the standard explicitly states this method is not entirely satisfactory and the water detected is almost always lower than the actual content.
⚠️ Critical Hierarchy of Methods: When highly accurate results are required, the standard mandates Test Method D4006 (Water by Distillation, MPMS Chapter 10.2) for water content, and Test Method D473 (Sediment by Extraction, MPMS Chapter 10.1) for sediment. Note 1 explicitly identifies D4006 as the preferred method.
