D396-24 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Fuel Oil Grades and Classification

ASTM D396 covers fuel oils for use in various burners. Grades No. 1 S5000, No. 1 S500, and No. 1 S15 are middle distillates for vaporizing burners or low pour point applications. Grades No. 2 S5000, No. 2 S500, and No. 2 S15 are for domestic and small industrial burners. Residual fuels include No. 4 (Light), No. 4, No. 5 (Light), No. 5 (Heavy), and No. 6, used in industrial burners with preheating. Biodiesel blends B6-B20 are also specified.

⚙️ Key Properties and Test Methods

The standard specifies properties like sulfur content, viscosity, flash point, and pour point. Test methods include D56 for flash point, D445 for viscosity, and D97 for pour point. Table 1 summarizes specifications for middle distillate fuels.

🟦 Grade 📏 Sulfur (ppm max) 📐 Viscosity @40°C (mm²/s) 🎯 Flash Point (°C min) ⚡ Pour Point (°C max)
No. 1 S15 15 1.3 – 2.1 38 −18
No. 1 S500 500 1.3 – 2.1 38 −18
No. 1 S5000 5000 1.3 – 2.1 38 −18
No. 2 S15 15 1.9 – 3.4 38 −6
No. 2 S500 500 1.9 – 3.4 38 −6
No. 2 S5000 5000 1.9 – 3.4 38 −6
💡 Note: The “S” designation indicates maximum sulfur content in ppm. For example, S15 fuels contain ≤15 ppm sulfur, suitable for low-emission burners.

🛢️ Biodiesel and Residual Fuel Specifications

Biodiesel blends B6–B20 must meet the same property limits as No. 1 or No. 2 grades, with sulfur classes S5000, S500, or S15. Residual fuels have higher viscosity and require preheating. Table 2 shows properties for residual grades.

🟦 Grade 📏 Sulfur (% mass max) 📐 Viscosity @100°C (mm²/s) 🎯 Flash Point (°C min) ⚡ Pour Point (°C max)
No. 4 (Light) 2.0 1.9 – 5.5 38 −6
No. 4 2.0 5.5 – 24.0 38 −6
No. 5 (Light) 3.0 24.0 – 75.0 55
No. 5 (Heavy) 3.0 75.0 – 250.0 55
No. 6 3.0 250 – 500 60
⚠️ Preheating Required: Grades No. 5 and No. 6 residual fuels often need preheating to achieve proper atomization. Handle at elevated temperatures per safety guidelines.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🔍 What is the difference between Grade No. 1 and No. 2 fuel oil?

Grade No. 1 has lower viscosity (1.3–2.1 mm²/s at 40°C) and pour point (−18°C), making it ideal for vaporizing burners and cold climates. Grade No
