ASTM D3924-24 defines the standard environment for conditioning and testing paint, varnish, lacquer, and related materials. This specification ensures consistent conditions for accurate and reproducible test results. It covers standard atmospheres, temperature definitions, and conditioning requirements.
The standard atmosphere requires a temperature of 23°C ± 2°C (73.5°F ± 3.5°F) and a relative humidity of 50% ± 10%. For applications requiring tighter control, tolerances of ±1°C (±2°F) and ±5% relative humidity may be specified. The environment must be well-ventilated but free from drafts, dust, and fumes, as per Section 3.
| 🟦 Condition | 📏 Value | 🎯 Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 23°C (73.5°F) | ±2°C (±3.5°F) |
| Relative Humidity | 50% | ±10% |
| Closer Temperature | 23°C | ±1°C (±2°F) |
| Closer Humidity | 50% | ±5% |
According to Section 6, organic coating materials or dried test films must be conditioned for at least 3 hours in the appropriate atmosphere before conducting tests. For routine testing, a room temperature of 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F) is acceptable. However, for referee testing, the standard atmosphere with specified tolerances must be used. Verify the temperature of the material before testing.
The standard references ASTM E171 for conditioning and testing flexible barrier packaging, E337 for measuring humidity, and G113 for weathering test terminology. Room temperature is defined as the range from 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F). The standard temperature for testing is as specified in Section 3.

The standard atmosphere requires a temperature of 23°C ± 2°C (73.5°F ± 3.5°F) and a relative humidity of 50% ± 10%.
Materials should be conditioned for not less than 3 hours in the appropriate atmosphere before testing.
Room temperature is defined as the range from 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F).
Referee testing should be conducted in the standard atmosphere as specified in Section 3, unless otherwise specified in the test method.
