D3909 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D3909/D3909M‑22 defines the standard specification for mineral‑surfaced asphalt roll roofing constructed from a glass felt base. This product is specifically engineered for service as a cap sheet in built‑up roofing (BUR) systems. Under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, the standard provides comprehensive requirements for materials, physical properties, and workmanship to ensure reliable field performance.

🏗️ Materials and Manufacture Process

The glass felt base is a thin, porous sheet composed predominantly of fine glass fibers uniformly deposited in a nonwoven pattern, which may be reinforced with glass yarns. A water‑insoluble agent is required in the felt formulation.

During manufacture, the glass mat is uniformly impregnated and coated on both sides with an asphaltic material, potentially compounded with a mineral stabilizer. The weather side is surfaced with firmly embedded mineral granules, while the reverse side receives an anti‑stick coating to facilitate unrolling.

⚡ Technical Tip: Always verify the manufacturer’s documentation confirms compliance with all sections of D3909/D3909M, particularly the dimensions, masses, and area coverage specified in Tables 1 and 2 of the standard. Refer to Test Methods D228/D228M for the exact sampling and testing protocols required for acceptance of the material.

📐 Physical Property Requirements and Compliance

The finished product must meet several rigorous physical property criteria. These requirements govern handling characteristics and long‑term durability under heat exposure. Values are stated separately in SI or inch‑pound units and must not be combined.
