D3815 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Apparatus and Specimen Requirements

The open-flame carbon arc exposure apparatus with daylight filters is used for accelerated weathering of pressure-sensitive tapes, conforming to Practices G151 and G152. Specimens are mounted on rigid panels of Type 302 or 304 stainless steel per Specification A666, with a bright annealed finish. Panel dimensions are approximately 75 mm by 225 mm (3 in. by 9 in.).

💡 Tip: For xenon-arc exposure alternatives, see Practice D6551/D6551M.

⚙️ Exposure Conditions and Operating Guidelines

Exposure must follow G151 and G152 procedures. Duration is based on material specification or agreement. Condition specimens per Practice G147 before testing. Consistent operation is critical for reproducibility within the accepted limits of temperature and humidity.

📊 Key Considerations and Limitations

Results are not equivalent to natural weathering without established correlation. This practice is intended for comparative testing and quality assurance. Variations in operating conditions can affect outcomes, so strict adherence to G151 and G152 is required.
