ASTM D3811/D3811M-21a defines the standard test method for evaluating the unwind force of pressure-sensitive tape rolls. This method is essential for quality assurance in packaging and distribution environments, simulating low-rate unwinding conditions.
The apparatus consists of a constant-rate-of-extension (CRE) tension tester with autographic recording, calibrated to 0.5% of full scale. A free-turning spindle, sized to fit snugly inside the tape core, is mounted on the crosshead. The crosshead moves at a uniform rate of 5 ± 0.2 mm/s [12.0 ± 0.5 in./min]. The scale range should be such that the mean test level falls between 20% and 50% of full scale.
The test involves unwinding approximately 150 mm [6 in.] of tape, recording the maximum force as the unwind force. Conditioning of the test specimens must follow Practice D4332. Sampling is performed per Practice D3715/D3715M.
| 🟦 Parameter | 📏 Specification |
|---|---|
| Test Speed | 5 ± 0.2 mm/s [12.0 ± 0.5 in./min] |
| Unwind Length | 150 mm [6 in.] (approximately) |
| Accuracy | 0.5% of full scale |
| Scale Range | 20–50% of full scale for mean level |
The primary property measured is the unwind force, defined as the maximum force observed during the specified unwind length. This force is indicative of the tape’s unwinding performance at low rates and is used for specification compliance (maximum, minimum, or mean).
As per Section 5.2, this method can be used to indicate satisfaction where unwind force specifications are established, provided the rate-dependent responses are taken into account. The test does not predict behavior at high unwinding rates due to the potential inversion of response.
This test method covers one procedure for determining the force required to unwind a roll of pressure-sensitive tape.
A CRE tension tester with autographic recording and a free-turning spindle are required. The tester must be calibrated to 0.5% full-scale accuracy.
