This test method, designated D3810-97 (Reapproved 2007), covers the determination of or the recommendation for minimum application torque that results in a fully degraded removal torque greater than the maximum expected reverse-ratchet torque for Type IA child-resistant closures, as classified in Classification D3475. It provides a procedure to assure the maintenance of child-resistant properties.
A major limitation is that many cappers lack the capability for measuring closure application torques; therefore, minimal recommendations derived from this method are defined in terms of immediate removal torques.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D10 on Packaging and Subcommittee D10.32 on Consumer, Pharmaceutical, Medical, and Child Resistant Packaging.

⚙️ Test Procedure and Torque Measurement
The procedure involves applying the closure with a controlled application torque to an appropriate container. The package is then stored under specified conditions of temperature and relative humidity to achieve a fully degraded removal torque. Torque measurements are carried out using calibrated torque meters in accordance with Practice D3474.
Referenced test methods include D3198 for application and removal torque, and D3472 for reverse-ratchet torque. Conditioning should follow ISO Bulletin 2233 for accurate results.
