This fire-test-response standard defines a small-scale laboratory procedure for determining the comparative burning characteristics of solid plastics in a vertical position. A 20-mm (50W) premixed flame is applied to the base of the specimen, and the burning behavior is observed under controlled conditions.
Specimens are prepared from solid plastic materials and are tested in a vertical orientation. The standard specifies that the test is conducted using a laboratory burner meeting ASTM D5025, which produces a 20 mm high flame with a 50W nominal power. This setup ensures consistency across tests and is equivalent to the UL 94 vertical burning test.
The test procedure involves applying the flame to the specimen for two 10-second periods, separated by a period of free burning. After each flame application, the afterflame time (t1 and t2) and afterglow time are recorded. Classification is based on the duration of afterflame and whether the specimen drips burning material that ignites a cotton indicator.
Table 1 summarizes the classification criteria for V-0, V-1, and V-2 ratings:
| 🟦 Class | 📏 Max t1 | 📐 Max t2 | 🎯 Total Afterflame | ⚡ Cotton Ignition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| V-0 | 10 s | 10 s | 50 s | No |
| V-1 | 30 s | 30 s | 250 s | No |
| V-2 | 30 s | 30 s | 250 s | Yes |
This classification system is intended for quality assurance and preselection of materials for electronic components and appliances.
The primary measurements include afterflame time, afterglow time, and ignition of the cotton indicator. These properties indicate the material’s flammability behavior under the specified flame exposure. The results are preliminary and must be evaluated within the context of the final product application.
Note that this test does not measure flame spread, heat release rate, or fire resistance under real-fire conditions. For thin films or flexible materials, refer to ASTM D4804 or D635.
This standard provides a method to measure the comparative burning characteristics of solid plastics in a vertical position, using a small-scale flame test.
This test method is equivalent to the UL 94 Vertical Burning Test (V-0, V-1, V-2), and results are directly comparable.
Plastics used in building construction, wall and floor coverings, and furnishings are not covered. Additionally, the test does not evaluate flame spread or heat release.
SI units are standard for this method, ensuring consistency and international alignment with other standards like IEC 60695-11-10.
