ASTM D3796-09 (Reapproved 2024) defines the standard practice for the calibration of Type S pitot tubes. This practice is specifically applicable to the determination of Type S pitot coefficients within the gas velocity range of 305 m/min to 1524 m/min (5.08 m/s to 25.4 m/s / 1000 ft/min to 5000 ft/min). The method covers both isolated Type S pitot tubes and pitobe assemblies.
Per Terminology D1356, an isolated Type S pitot tube is any such tube calibrated or used alone. A pitobe assembly is a Type S pitot tube attached to an isokinetic source-sampling probe. The normal working velocity range for this practice is strictly defined as approximately 305 m/min to 1524 m/min (5.08 m/s to 25.4 m/s).
