D3780-22 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📜 Scope and Document Structure of D3780-22

ASTM D3780-22, titled Standard Performance Specification for Men’s and Boys’ Woven Dress Suit Fabrics and Woven Sportswear Jacket, Slack, and Trouser Fabrics, establishes the minimum performance requirements for these garment categories. Approved on November 1, 2022, and published in November 2022, this edition supersedes the previous D3780-14. The standard is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Subcommittee D13.61 on Apparel.

The specification covers woven fabrics composed of any textile fiber or blend of fibers. It applies to both the length and width directions of the fabric where pertinent. Section 1.2 explicitly excludes woven fabrics used for interlinings from its scope. The standard also includes a safety caveat stating it does not address all safety concerns, placing the responsibility on the user to establish safe health and environmental practices.

⚙️ Key Mechanical and Physical Test Methods

Fabric integrity and structural performance are verified through several core ASTM standard test methods. These procedures assess breaking and tearing strength, yarn slippage resistance, and bond strength for fused or laminated constructions.

⚠️ Withdrawn Method Notice: Several referenced standards, including ASTM D434 (Resistance to Slippage of Yarns) and ASTM D2905 (Statements on Number of Specimens), have been withdrawn by ASTM. Users must consult the latest edition of D3780 or ASTM Committee D13 for current testing protocols.
