This performance specification covers women’s and girls’ woven rainwear and all-purpose water-repellent coat outer fabrics composed of any textile fiber or mixture of textile fibers. It is not applicable to woven fabrics used for linings and interlinings, nor to bonded or laminated fabrics. The requirements apply to the length and width directions for properties where fabric direction is pertinent.
This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns; it is the user’s responsibility to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
The specification establishes minimum performance criteria for fabrics, which are evaluated using standardized ASTM and AATCC test methods. The table below lists key referenced test methods and the properties they assess.
| 🟦 Standard | 📏 Test Method | 🎯 Property Evaluated |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM D 5034 | Breaking Force and Elongation (Grab Test) | Fabric strength in warp and fill directions |
| ASTM D 1424 | Tear Resistance by Falling-Pendulum Apparatus | Tear strength |
| ASTM D 434 | Resistance to Slippage of Yarns Using a Standard Seam | Seam slippage resistance |
| AATCC 22 | Water Repellency: Spray Test | Water resistance |
| AATCC 135 | Dimensional Changes in Automatic Home Laundering | Shrinkage after laundering |
| AATCC 16 | Colorfastness to Light | Lightfastness |
All testing must be conducted according to the specified editions of the referenced methods. Specimens should be conditioned under standard atmospheric conditions as per the test methods. The requirements apply to both warp and fill directions where pertinent.
Additional tests for colorfastness include perspiration, crocking, and washing, as well as water resistance via the rain test (AATCC 35). Evaluations use gray scales for color change and staining.
Refer to Table 1 in the standard for specific performance limits.
This standard applies to woven rainwear and all-purpose water-repellent coat fabrics for women and girls, excluding linings, interlinings, and bonded or laminated fabrics.
Water repellency is assessed using AATCC Test Method 22 (Spray Test) and AATCC Test Method 35 (Rain Test).
Yes, colorfastness to light, crocking, perspiration, washing, and dry cleaning are included, evaluated per AATCC methods.
Key mechanical properties include breaking strength (per ASTM D 5034), tear resistance (per ASTM D 1424), and resistance to seam slippage (per ASTM D 434).
