D3741-00 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Overview and Scope of D3741-00

ASTM D3741-00 (Reapproved 2020) provides standardized qualitative visual test methods for evaluating the appearance of admixtures containing halogenated organic solvents. The methods detect extraneous contaminants including suspended particles, floaters, sediment, turbidity, foaming, or free water. Values are stated in SI units. The standard offers two distinct procedures: Test Method A (Nessler Tube) and Test Method B (Clear Glass Bottle).

🔬 Test Method A – Nessler Tube Examination

This method uses a 100 mL tall-form Nessler tube with a ground glass cap. The height of the 100 mL graduation mark must be between 275 mm and 295 mm above the tube bottom. A specialized viewing stand directs white light through the longitudinal axis while shielding the tube from side light.
