ASTM D3721 – 05 (Reapproved 2019) specifies the requirements for synthetic red iron oxide pigment intended for use in paints and coatings. This standard is directly under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01. The pigment must be manufactured by one of the following processes: calcination of iron salts, precipitation from iron salts, calcination of synthetic iron oxide, or as a product of organic reduction. The specification was developed following internationally recognized principles for standardization.
To qualify, the pigment must meet strict compositional limits, which serve as the benchmark for quality and consistency across the industry.
| 🔍 Property | 📏 Requirement |
|---|---|
| Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃), min, % | 96.0 |
| Moisture & Volatile Matter, max, % | 1.0 |
| Organic Coloring Matter | None |
| Coarse Particles (45 µm / No. 325 sieve), max, % | 1.0 |
| Matter Soluble in Water, max, % | 0.2 |
| pH Value, min | 5.0 |
Sampling Requirements (Section 4): For every lot, batch, or production unit, two random samples must be taken from different packages. In shipments, the ratio is two samples for every 10,000 lb (5,000 kg), with a minimum of two samples for smaller shipments. The purchaser has the option to test the samples separately or blend them to form a single composite sample for evaluation.
Mandated Test Methods (Section 5): All testing must strictly adhere to the specified ASTM methods to ensure uniformity and repeatability.
Test procedures not covered by an ASTM standard must be mutually agreed upon between the purchaser and the seller.
The limits set by this standard are directly linked to real-world performance in paints and coatings. The minimum Fe₂O₃ content of 96.0% guarantees high tinting strength and effective hiding power. The maximum 1.0% moisture prevents clumping and ensures better dispersion. The maximum 0.2% water-soluble matter protects the film integrity from leaching and osmotic blistering. Finally, the pH minimum of 5.0 ensures the pigment remains stable and non-reactive with common resin chemistries, preventing gelation or viscosity shifts in the final product formulation.
By specifying these rigorous chemical and physical properties, ASTM D3721 guarantees a reliable, high-purity raw material that allows formulators to achieve consistent color and performance batch after batch.
The standard requires a minimum iron oxide content of 96.0%.
The mass color and tint character are evaluated against a mutually agreed upon reference sample using ASTM Test Method D387.
The total residue retained on a 45-µm (No. 325) sieve must not exceed 1.0%.
The standard mandates that the pigment contain no organic coloring matter to ensure color stability and chemical inertness in the final coating system.
