D3655-22 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Applicability of D3655-22

ASTM D3655-22 establishes the standard performance specification for men’s and women’s sliver knitted overcoat and jacket fabrics. The standard is designed to evaluate fabrics composed of any textile fiber or mixture of textile fibers. It applies the requirements to both the length and width directions where fabric orientation is pertinent. Section 1.2 explicitly excludes knitted fabrics used for interlinings from this specification.

⚠️ Regulatory Context: This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns. Users must establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices. The standard was developed in accordance with the WTO TBT Committee principles for international standardization.

⚙️ Core Performance Tests and Referenced Standards

Compliance with D3655-22 is determined through a comprehensive suite of standardized tests. These methods, published by ASTM, AATCC, and the Federal Government, evaluate the fabric’s mechanical integrity, colorfastness, dimensional stability, and safety. The current editions of all cited test methods shall prevail.

🟦 Performance Property 📏 Test Method Designation 🎯 Evaluation Focus
Bursting Strength ASTM D3786 (Diaphragm) or D3787 (Ball Burst) Resistance to mechanical rupture
Colorfastness to Crocking AATCC TM8 (Crockmeter) / TM116 (Rotary Vertical) Staining transfer via Gray Scale
Colorfastness to Laundering AATCC TM61 (Accelerated) Color change & staining after wash
Dimensional Change AATCC TM135 (Home Laundering) Percent change in dimensions
Flammability 16 CFR Chapter II (FFA Regulations) Class 1, 2, or 3 safety rating
Bond Strength (Laminates) ASTM D2724 Peel strength / delamination resistance

Additional critical evaluations include colorfastness to Light (AATCC TM16.3 Xenon Arc), Perspiration (TM15), Burnt Gas Fumes (TM
