D3617 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM Standard D3617/D3617M – 17 (Reapproved 2022) provides a standardized guide for removing and analyzing specimens from built-up bituminous roof systems during the application process. The primary goal of this practice is to determine the approximate quantities of the roof system components and to identify the possible presence of moisture or dry spots between plies before the application of flood coating and top surfacing.

📋 Scope and Application Requirements

This practice serves as a field guide for quality assurance during the installation of built-up roof systems. It applies to both 914 mm [36 in.] and 1000 mm [39⅜ in.] wide felt rolls. The components subject to analysis include insulation (when it is part of the membrane system), plies of roofing felt, interply layers of bituminous material, and any top coating present before surfacing aggregate is applied.

💡 Important Note on Units: The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Each system must be used independently of the other, as combining values may result in nonconformance with the standard.

📐 Sampling Protocols and Specimen Geometry

Proper sampling is critical for an accurate assessment of the roof membrane. The standard mandates a specific frequency for taking specimens and a precise geometry for the test cut to ensure consistency across different projects and inspectors.

🟦 Sampling Parameter 📏 Required Specification
Minimum Specimens per Roof1
Additional Specimen Frequency1 per 929 m² [10,000 ft²]
Location SelectionRandom
Specimen Dimensions300 mm × 300 mm [12 in. × 12 in.]
Cutting ToolTemplate (see Fig. 1 of standard)
Surface PreparationSweep clean before cutting
⚠️ Deficiency Investigation Protocol: If the initial test cut indicates deficiencies in the membrane, four additional test cuts must be taken at diagonal locations. Each must be 3 m [10 ft] in every direction from the original test cut and examined in the same manner as the original.

🔍 Component Identification and Referenced Materials

The analysis of the extracted specimen focuses on quantifying the components and checking for interply moisture or dry spots. The constituent materials, particularly the roofing felts, must meet their respective ASTM specifications to ensure system performance.
