The ASTM D3581-02 specification defines the requirements for thermoplastic, hot-applied, jet-fuel-resistant joint sealants used in Portland cement concrete and tar-concrete pavements. This standard ensures sealants provide durable sealing against moisture and jet fuel infiltration, with values in SI units as standard.
This specification covers one type of thermoplastic sealant applied in hot molten form. It is intended for sealing joints and cracks in pavements, with a focus on resistance to jet fuels and lubricating oils. The values stated in SI units are regarded as standard, while values in parentheses are for information only. The standard does not address all safety concerns, and users are responsible for appropriate safety and health practices. Specific precaution statements are provided in the Appendix.
The sealant must meet critical physical properties under various conditions. Table 1 summarizes the requirements for penetration, flow, bond, and solubility as outlined in the standard.
| 🟦 Property | 📏 Test Condition | 🎯 Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Penetration (Nonimmersed) | 25°C, 150g, 5s | Not exceed 130 |
| Penetration (Immersed) | 25°C, 150g, 5s | Not exceed 155; increase ≤25 over nonimmersed |
| Flow | 60°C, 5h | Not exceed 30 |
| Bond (Nonimmersed) | -18°C, 3 cycles | ≤1 specimen with crack or separation |
| Bond (Fuel-Immersed) | -18°C, 3 cycles | ≤1 cohesive failure; bare area ≤160 mm² |
| Bond (Water-Immersed) | -18°C, 3 cycles | ≤1 specimen with crack or separation |
| Solubility | Dry weight variation | ±2.0% max |
The joint sealant shall be composed of a mixture of materials with or without rubber, forming an adhesive compound resistant to jet fuels and lubricating oils. The manufacturer must specify the maximum heating temperature on containers and provide it to testing agencies prior to tests. Testing procedures follow ASTM D5167 for melting and D5329 for test methods. The sealant must effectively seal cracks and joints against moisture and jet fuel infiltration throughout repeated cycles.
It specifies requirements for hot-applied, jet-fuel-resistant joint sealants for Portland cement concrete and tar-concrete pavements.
Penetration is tested at 25°C with a 150g load for 5 seconds after immersion in fuel or water, with a maximum increase of 25 over nonimmersed values.
Bond tests involve three complete cycles at -18°C, evaluating nonimmersed, fuel-immersed, and water-immersed specimens for failures.
It ensures the sealant conforms to all requirements when applied at the correct temperature, with the manufacturer responsible for defining it on containers.
