ASTM D3548 – 09 (Reapproved 2023) defines the standard specification for ethyl acrylate (99 % grade) intended for use in paint, varnish, lacquer, and related coating products. Under the jurisdiction of ASTM Subcommittee D01.35, this standard establishes precise property limits, verifiable by specific test methods, and outlines critical safety precautions for handling this monomeric ester.
To ensure product quality and consistency, ethyl acrylate must conform to the detailed physical and chemical requirements listed in the table below. All values are tested in accordance with the referenced standard test methods.
| 🟦 Property | 📏 Specification Limit | 🎯 Test Method |
|---|---|---|
| Purity (as ethyl acrylate), wt % | 99.5 min | D3362 |
| Water content, wt % | 0.08 max | D1364 |
| Color, Pt-Co scale | 10 max (bulk) 20 max (drum) |
D1209 or D5386 |
| Acidity (as acrylic acid), wt % | 0.008 max | D1613 |
| Methyl ether of hydroquinone (MEHQ), wppm | 10 minA | D3125 |
A Lower MEHQ levels may be agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer. However, lower levels are not recommended for safety reasons.
Conformance with ASTM D3548 requires rigorous adherence to the sampling, rounding, and testing protocols defined by the referenced standards. Sampling of the chemical shall be conducted in accordance with Practice E300. For the purposes of determining compliance, all observed or calculated values must be rounded off “to the nearest unit” in the last right-hand digit of the specification limit, following the method prescribed in Practice E29.
The standard relies on a suite of well-established analytical techniques to verify each property:
Ethyl acrylate is a reactive monomer that can polymerize if exposed to heat, light, or contamination. Section 4 of the standard provides specific precautionary instructions. All samples must be stored in amber bottles or otherwise fully protected from light. Storage areas must be cool and free from potential sources of heat or ignition. The specified inhibitor, methyl ether of hydroquinone, requires the presence of dissolved oxygen to function effectively; therefore, exposure to air should not be entirely restricted unless alternative safety measures are in place.
Ethyl acrylate must have a minimum purity of
