ASTM D3461-18, Standard Test Method for Softening Point of Asphalt and Pitch (Mettler Cup-and-Ball Method), specifies the procedure for determining the softening point of these materials within a range of 50 °C to 180 °C. Because asphalt and pitch do not possess a sharp solid-liquid melting point, they gradually soften or lose viscosity as temperature increases. As stated in Section 4.1, this test method establishes an arbitrary but closely defined set of conditions to yield reproducible results, serving as a critical tool for evaluating the consistency and uniformity of shipments or supply sources.
The results obtained from this automated cup-and-ball procedure are comparable to those achieved using the traditional ring-and-ball apparatus defined in Test Method D36. If the Mettler method yields results outside specified requirements, the standard explicitly allows for rerunning the test using the D36 ring-and-ball method as an official referee technique.
The heart of the test is the Mettler Toledo dropping point cell, which comprises a programmable control unit and an integrated or separate furnace unit. The control unit must maintain a continuous, linear heating rate of exactly 2.0 °C/min from 25 °C to 250 °C, while displaying the temperature to a precision of 0.1 °C. The furnace is capable of heating one or two sample cup assemblies concurrently.
Each assembly consists of a cylindrical cup with a precisely machined 6.5 mm hole in its bottom. The test specimen is placed in this cup, and an 8 mm diameter lead ball is centered on top of the sample. As the furnace heats the assembly at the specified linear rate, the asphalt or pitch specimen softens. The softening point is defined as the temperature at which the sample has flowed downward exactly 19 mm, breaking the path of a light beam below the cup. This triggers the control unit to record the final temperature and terminate the heating program.
The following tables illustrate the critical parameters required by the standard for the Mettler Cup-and-Ball method and how it compares to its companion standard.

| Lead Ball Diameter | 8.0 mm | Centered on top of specimen |
| Required Flow Distance for Detection | 19 mm | Distance to interrupt the light beam |
| Controlled Heating Rate | 2.0 °C/min | Linear rate from 25 °C to 250 °C |
| Digital Temperature Readout | 0.1 °C resolution | Required throughout the test run |

This standard measures the softening point of asphalt and pitch. It defines the temperature at which these materials, under the specific constraints of the Mettler cup-and-ball apparatus, have flowed enough to interrupt a light beam.
