ASTM D3353 – 18 (Reapproved 2024) defines standard test methods for fibrous-insulated magnet wire. It covers fibers or fibrous-tape insulation served or wrapped helically over bare conductors or film-insulated substrates (D1676). These test methods are intended primarily for the evaluation of the electrical insulating materials used in the wire construction for electrical apparatus.
The standard specifies tests for the unique fibrous construction. Fibrous Coverage (Section 6) assesses the uniformity of the serving or wrapping applied in single or multiple layers. Measurement of Dimensions (Section 7) determines the overall diameter and insulation build. Adhesion and Flexibility (Section 8) evaluates the bond integrity and resistance to cracking of the fibrous layer under mechanical stress. Specific cautionary procedures for safe handling are noted in Section 8.4.1.
Conductor properties form the primary baseline for evaluation. Elongation (Section 4) is performed according to Test Methods E8. Electrical Resistance of Conductors (Section 5) follows Test Method B193. The Dielectric Breakdown Voltage test (Section 9) is a critical assessment of the insulation’s ability to withstand electrical stress, conducted using the procedures of Test Method D149. High-voltage safety protocols are specifically addressed in Section 9.4.1.
The following table summarizes the primary test methods defined in the standard and their corresponding reference documents:
| 📏 Test Parameter | 🟦 Section | 🎯 Reference Standard | ⚡ Key Property Measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elongation | 4 | ASTM E8 | Mechanical ductility |
| Electrical Resistance | 5 | ASTM B193 | Conductor resistivity |
| Fibrous Coverage | 6 | D3353 Specification | Wrap quality and uniformity |
| Dimensions | 7 | D3353 Specification | Diameter and insulation build |
| Adhesion and Flexibility | 8 | D3353 Specification | Layer adherence and flexibility |
| Dielectric Breakdown | 9 | ASTM D149 | Voltage withstand capability |
