D3308-12 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Classification

ASTM D3308 – 12 (Reapproved 2022) establishes the standard specification for PTFE resin skived tape manufactured from molding and ram extrusion materials. The document covers skived tape in thicknesses ranging from 0.0005 to 0.250 inches (0.013 to 6.35 mm), with the inch-pound units regarded as the standard. The term “skiving” refers to the process of continuously shaving a film from the outer surface to the core of a molded cylindrical tube on a lathe.

The specification classifies the material into four distinct types (Type I, II, III, and IV), allowing users to select a grade tailored for general purpose, electrical, or mechanical applications. This standard is recognized for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.

📋 Important Note: ASTM D3308 and the ISO 13000 series (ISO 13000-1 / 13000-2) differ in approach and detail. Data obtained using either document may not be technically equivalent and should be compared with caution.

⚙️ Test Procedures and Property Requirements

Conformance to ASTM D3308 is verified through a defined battery of test methods. All specimens must be conditioned in accordance with Practice D618 prior to evaluation. The primary test methods and typical property requirements are summarized below:
