D329-07 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📖 Scope and General Requirements

ASTM D329-07 (Reapproved 2021) defines the standard specification for Acetone (99.5 % grade), also known chemically as dimethyl ketone or 2-propanone. This specification is relied upon by the paint, coatings, and chemical manufacturing industries to ensure material consistency and performance.

All specified limits in this standard require conformance based on values rounded to the nearest unit in accordance with Practice E29. The standard is written exclusively in SI units. Users are reminded that acetone is classified as an OSHA-designated hazardous chemical, and a review of the supplier’s Material Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is mandatory for establishing appropriate safety and health practices.

📊 Chemical and Physical Specifications

To meet the grade designation, acetone must conform to the following physical and chemical requirements:

🔬 Property 📏 Specification Limit ⚡ Test Method
Color, Pt-Co Scale, max 10 D1209 or D5386
Odor Characteristic, Nonresidual D1296
Water Content, % by weight, max 0.5 D1364
Distillation Range (including 56.1°C), °C, max 1.0 D1078
Nonvolatile Matter, mg/100 mL, max 5 D1353
Acidity (as Acetic Acid), % by weight, max 0.002 D1613
Alkalinity (as NH₃), % by weight, max 0.001 D1614
Permanganate Time @ 25°C, minutes, min 30 D1363
Density (20/20 °C) 0.789 – 0.791 D4052
Water Miscibility Passes Test D1722
Heptane Miscibility Passes Test D1476
💡 Technical Tip: The Permanganate Time test (D1363) is a highly sensitive indicator of oxidizable impurities such as aldehydes. A high permanganate time (≥ 30 minutes) indicates excellent chemical stability and is a key differentiator for high-purity 99.5% grade acetone.
⚠️ Safety Alert: Acetone is a highly flammable liquid (flash point -20°C) and an OSHA-designated hazardous chemical. Always ground containers during transfer, avoid excessive heat and ignition sources, and ensure adequate ventilation. Refer to the applicable SDS for emergency handling and first aid procedures.

⚙️ Standardized Test Methods and Sampling

The standard references a robust suite of ASTM methods to verify conformance. Proper sampling is critical and must be performed in accordance with Practice E300 (Sampling Industrial Chemicals). Additional guidance for testing volatile solvents can be found in Guide D268.
