ASTM D3265-24 establishes a standardized test method for determining the tint strength of carbon black relative to an Industry Tint Reference Black (ITRB). This measurement is critical for quality characterization within the rubber and carbon black manufacturing industries. Governed by ASTM Committee D24, the method was specifically developed for N100, N200, and N300 series carbon blacks and references supporting practices for sampling (D1799, D1900) and precision validation (D4483, D4821). All values stated in SI units are regarded as the standard.
The test method involves mixing a carbon black sample with a white powder (zinc oxide) and a liquid vehicle (epoxidized soybean oil, ESO) to create a homogeneous paste. The paste is spread to form a suitable surface for measurement using a photo-electric reflectance meter. The tint strength is then calculated using the following relationship:
Tint Strength (%) = (Reflectance of ITRB ÷ Reflectance of Sample) × 100
| 🟦 Apparatus Type | ⚙️ Mixing Mechanism | 🎯 Approved Applications | 📝 Restrictions & Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic Muller | Mulling plates with paste filler | All rubber grade carbon blacks (including N100, N200, N300 series) | Primary standard apparatus. Required for formal dispute resolution. |
| Hauschild SpeedMixer (DAC 150 FVZ) | Dual asymmetric centrifugation | Carcass and soft blacks (provides equivalent tint strength) | Must NOT be used for tread or high surface area specialty blacks. User is responsible for ensuring adequate dispersion. |
💡 Formula Tip: The tint strength value is expressed strictly as a percentage. Accurate and reproducible results depend heavily on maintaining consistent mixing times, paste preparation techniques, and measurement conditions across all tests.
For the broad range of commercial rubber grade carbon blacks, tint strength is highly dependent upon particle size. However, it is also influenced by the structure and aggregate size distribution of the carbon black. Therefore, differences
