Standard ASTM D3204-93 covers preformed pressure-relief joint fillers manufactured from cellular plastic materials. These fillers are designed for use in full-depth concrete pavement joints, approximating 4.0 inches (102 mm) in width, to effectively relieve stress and avoid potential distress in adjacent structures or pavement sections. The standard specifies two distinct material types with unique manufacturing and performance characteristics.
Type I fillers are made from foamed polyethylene and must feature a closed cell, homogeneous cross-section entirely free of laminations. Type II fillers are manufactured from foamed polyurethane and require a semi-open cell structure that is also homogeneous and lamination-free. Both types must be preformed and exhibit sufficient structural integrity for handling.
Critical physical requirements are tested in accordance with ASTM D545. The following table summarizes the key mechanical properties specified in the standard:
| 🟦 Property | 📏 Test Condition | 🎯 Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum Compressibility | 25% compression load | ≥ 3 psi (21 kPa) |
| Maximum Compressibility | 85% compression load | ≤ 300 psi (2070 kPa) |
| Recovery | 10 min after 50% compression | <
