The standard ASTM D3188-06 (Reapproved 2021) provides standardized procedures for evaluating non-halogenated isobutene-isoprene rubbers (IIR), commonly known as butyl rubber. It is primarily intended for referee purposes and quality control but is also highly effective in research and development for comparing raw polymer behaviors using a tightly controlled formulation.
The exact standard test formula is critical for achieving reproducible results across different laboratories. The compounding ingredients are designed to highlight the inherent characteristics of the IIR polymer without introducing confounding variables from complex commercial formulations.
| 🛠️ Material | 📏 Parts by Mass (phr) |
|---|---|
| Isobutene-Isoprene Rubber (IIR) | 100.00 |
| Carbon Black (SRF, N762) | 50.00 |
| Zinc Oxide | 5.00 |
| Stearic Acid | 1.00 |
| MBTS (Accelerator) | 1.50 |
| Sulfur | 1.75 |
| Total | 159.25 |
Three distinct mixing methods are provided: Method A (Mill), Method B (Miniature Internal Mixer), and Method C (Lab Internal Mixer/Banbury). While all are permitted, the standard emphasizes that comparable results should not be assumed between methods. For highest reproducibility, Method A is often the preferred referee route.
For mill mixing, the rolls must be precisely maintained at a temperature of 50 ± 5 °C (122 ± 9 °F). The following cycle ensures a standard degree of polymer breakdown and ingredient dispersion.
| ⏱️ Cumulative Time (min) | ⚡ Operation |
|---|---|
| 0:00 | Band the IIR rubber on the mill. Add Zinc Oxide, Stearic Acid, and Carbon Black. |
| 5:00 | Add Sulfur and MBTS. |
| 10:00 | Cut down the batch. Roll up and pass endwise six times. Sheet off and cool. |
These test methods are designed for acceptance testing of raw IIR rubber. The compounded stock is evaluated using a suite of ASTM methods to determine viscosity, cure kinetics, and final physical properties.
IIR stands for Isobutene-Isoprene Rubber, commonly known as butyl rubber. This standard specifically covers non-halogenated grades of this polymer. Halogenated versions (e.g., BIIR, CIIR) are covered under a different standard (D3186).
SRF (Semi-Reinforcing Furnace) black, specifically grade N762, is chosen for its low structure and moderate reinforcement. It provides good mixing characteristics and test sensitivity for evaluating the raw polymer without masking polymer defects with high reinforcement levels.
