D3183-10 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📋 Scope and Significance

ASTM D3183 – 10 (Reapproved 2024) provides standardized methods for preparing pieces of rubber vulcanizates not in sheet form. This practice is essential when a product must be tested but cannot be cut directly for suitable specimens. The values stated in SI units are regarded as the standard.

📏 Standard Dimensions and Conditioning

Pieces are obtained from the product per its specification or, when direct cutting is infeasible, from specially molded sheets. These sheets are prepared from the identical unvulcanized compound and vulcanized per Practice D3182. The following standard thicknesses apply unless another thickness is technically necessary:

🟦 Thickness (mm) 📏 Thickness (in.) 🎯 Tolerance
2.00.08± 0.2 mm (± 0.008 in.)
4.00.16± 0.2 mm (± 0.008 in.)
6.30.25± 0.3 mm (± 0.012 in.)
12.50.50± 0.5 mm (± 0.02 in.)
⚠️ Critical Conditioning Rules: Pieces must be prepared no sooner than 16 hours after vulcanization and no later than 60 days after delivery. These limits can be modified only by explicit agreement between the involved parties.

Production control testing may be performed prior to the 16-hour minimum, provided this deviation is clearly noted in the respective test report.

⚙️ Preparation Procedures

When preparing pieces directly from the product, the specification for that particular product must be followed. If alternative sheets are prepared, the unvulcanized rubber compound must be identical to the product’s compound, and the vulcanizate state must be equivalent, judged from properties determinable on the product.
