ASTM D3157‑05 (Reapproved 2020) provides a standardized procedure for classifying the color of raw natural rubber using a defined color scale. The method relies on the visual comparison of a molded test specimen against a set of calibrated standard glasses. This classification is of primary importance to compounders and manufacturers because the color of the raw rubber directly determines the final color of the product, especially in light‑colored or translucent goods. The standard establishes rigorous conditions for the comparison to ensure consistent and repeatable results across different laboratories and material batches.
Consistent specimen preparation is critical for accurate color evaluation. The standard requires a molded disk of precise dimensions, produced under controlled pressure and temperature. All equipment must conform to the referenced ASTM practices (D3182, D926, D3767).
| 📐 Apparatus Parameter | 🎯 Specification |
|---|---|
| Mold Material | Stainless Steel or Aluminum |
| Mold Thickness | 1.60 ± 0.05 mm (0.063 ± 0.002 in.) |
| Specimen Diameter | Approximately 14 mm (0.55 in.) |
| Press Molding Pressure | Not less than 3.5 MPa (500 psi) |
| Platen Temperature | 150 ± 3 °C (302 ± 5 °F) |
The prepared disk is compared against the standard colored glasses, which are calibrated according to the intensity of their amber color. The matching takes place under diffuse daylight illumination against a matt white background; a comparator is preferred as it properly shrouds the test specimen and standard. The standard explicitly defines the structure of the color index scale.
| 🟦 Color Index Range | 📏 Increment Type |
|---|---|
| 1 to 5 | Half-integral steps (e.g., 1.0, 1.5, 2.0…) |
| 5 to 16 | Integral steps (5, 6, 7…) |
It provides a uniform method for classifying the color of raw natural rubber using a standard color scale. This allows manufacturers to evaluate and control the consistency of their raw material, which is critical when the color of the natural rubber dictates the color of the finished product.
A sample of raw rubber is molded into a disk using a hydraulic press operating at a minimum pressure of 3.5 MPa and a temperature of 150 ± 3 °C. The resulting disk must have a thickness of 1.60 ± 0.05 mm and a diameter of approximately 14 mm.
Color matching must be performed under diffuse daylight illumination against a matt white background. The use of a comparator is recommended because it properly locates the test specimen and the standard glass while shielding them from stray light, ensuring a reliable and reproducible reading.
The color index scale ranges from 1 to 16. The scale progresses in half-integral steps from 1 to 5 and in integral steps from 5 to 16. Higher numeric values on the scale correspond to a deeper or darker amber color in the raw rubber.
