D3124-98 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Scope, Principle, and Interferences

ASTM D3124-98 (Reapproved 2019), under the jurisdiction of Committee D20 on Plastics (Subcommittee D20.70 on Analytical Methods), defines the standard test method for determining vinylidene unsaturation in polyethylene by infrared spectrophotometry. The method is widely applicable to all types of polyethylenes, including ethylene plastics consisting of ethylene and α-olefin copolymers longer than propylene, as well as any blends of these materials (Section 1.1). The standard mandates the use of SI units and requires adherence to the specific safety hazards detailed in Section 8.

The analytical principle relies on the characteristic absorption band of the vinylidene group at 888 cm⁻¹ (11.26 µm), which arises from C-H deformation vibrations in the terminal CH₂ group (Section 4.1). A significant challenge is the overlap of this band with methyl group absorptions in the range of 889 to 903 cm⁻¹ (11.25 to 11.07 µm), particularly from alkyl chains longer than ethyl (Section 4.2).

📌 International Standard Note: As stated in Note 1 of the standard, no known ISO equivalent exists, cementing ASTM D3124 as the definitive global reference for this specific measurement.

⚙️ The Differential Infrared Procedure

To effectively eliminate the methyl group interference, ASTM D3124 employs a differential spectrophotometric technique. A brominated polymer sample is placed in the reference beam of a double-beam spectrophotometer. The bromination process selectively saturates the vinylidene unsaturation in this reference sample while leaving the methyl group absorptions fully intact. When the untreated test sample is placed in the sample beam, the identical methyl absorptions cancel out perfectly, revealing a clean and distinct vinylidene difference spectrum (Section 4.2). For instruments with computerized spectral manipulation capabilities, the same effect may be accomplished by subtraction of the brominated spectra from the untreated spectra.
