D3039 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Specimen Geometry and Types

The ASTM D3039 standard specifies several specimen configurations tailored to the reinforcement architecture. The laminate must be balanced and symmetric with respect to the test direction, containing continuous or discontinuous high-modulus fibers. The four primary test specimen types are Type A (0° longitudinal), Type B (90° transverse), Type C (balanced and symmetric multidirectional), and Type D (off-axis).

Specimens typically require adhesively bonded end tabs, usually made from a woven fiberglass/epoxy fabric approximately 1.5 mm [0.063 in] thick, with a 7° taper on the inner face to reduce stress concentrations at the grip interface. The standard dimensions for the various types are outlined below.

🟦 Specimen Type 📏 Width 📐 Overall Length 🎯 Thickness
Type A (0° Longitudinal) 15.0 mm [0.50 in] 250 mm [10.0 in] 1.0 mm [0.04 in]
Type B (90° Transverse) 25.0 mm [1.00 in] 175 mm [7.0 in] 2.0 mm [0.08 in]
Type C (Multidirectional) 25.0 mm [1.00 in] 250 mm [10.0 in] 2.5 mm [0.10 in]
Type D (Off-Axis) 25.0 mm [1.00 in] 250 mm [10.0 in] 2.0 mm [0.08 in]
💡 Tip: End tabs should not extend more than 50% of the total specimen length. A 7° taper angle on the tab facing the gage section is critical to minimize stress risers that can cause premature grip failures.

⚙️ Test Procedure and Speed Selection

Prior to testing, specimens must be conditioned in accordance with Procedure C of D5229/D5229M (moisture equilibrium) or conditioned at 23 ± 3°C [73 ± 5°F] and 50 ± 10% relative humidity if unspecified. Testing is performed on a machine verified in accordance with Practices E4, using wedge grips that provide positive clamping without inducing significant bending.

The standard speed for determining tensile strength is 1 mm/min [0.05 in/min] or 2 mm/min [0.10 in/min]. For modulus and Poisson’s ratio measurements, a slower speed or a strain-controlled rate is required. Any extensometer used must meet at least Class B-2 per Practice E83. Machine alignment must be verified per Practice E1012 to ensure axial loading and minimize bending strain. A minimum of five specimens per test condition is required per Practice E122.
