D2923-13 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Overview and Scope of D2923-13

ASTM D2923-13 measures the rigidity of polyolefin film and sheeting using two distinct procedures. The test method relies on a strain gauge attached to a beam which forces the film sample into a groove on a platform. The main variance between Procedure A and Procedure B is how they manage the well-documented interferences of static electricity and friction. Crucially, Section 1’s Note 1 warns that the two procedures, while aiming for the same effect, may not produce equivalent numerical results.

⚠️ Equivalency Advisory: The standard specifically advises that Procedure A and Procedure B are not guaranteed to agree. Laboratories should clearly state which method was employed and avoid directly comparing datasets generated by different procedures for the same material.

⚙️ Procedure Selection and Interference Control

The choice of procedure dictates the apparatus setup and required consumables. This is primarily driven by the need to eliminate static charge and mitigate friction on the sample platform, as detailed in Section 6.
