ASTM D2860/D2860M – 18 (Reapproved 2024) provides a standardized procedure for measuring the adhesion of pressure-sensitive tape to a fiberboard surface under a constant stress applied at a precise 90° angle. This method is specifically designed to evaluate the durability of tape bonds in a manner that simulates real-world conditions on fiberboard box closures.
The user of this test method is given the option of choosing the paper surface for the test. The test surface may be the standard linerboard, another linerboard of individual interest, or a specific fiberboard, allowing for either baseline quality control or targeted application testing.
The standard outlines two distinct test configurations, Procedure A and Procedure B. Both evaluate adhesion under identical mechanical conditions of angle and stress but with reversed test arrangements.
Procedure A: The pressure-sensitive tape is mounted on a rigid panel with the adhesive side exposed. A strip of linerboard (representing the fiberboard) is placed against the tape adhesive with controlled pressure over a specified area of contact. The panel is mounted horizontally. A specified mass is fastened to one end of the linerboard. The mass acts to peel the linerboard away from the adhesive at an angle of 90°. The time required to completely peel the linerboard from the tape is measured as the primary result.
Procedure B: In this procedure, the fiberboard or the linerboard representing it is adhered to a rigid panel and the tape is peeled from it. In all other respects, the procedure is the same as Procedure A. All test specimens must be conditioned in accordance with Practice D4332, and the quality assurance of the tape must follow Practice D3715/D3715M. Relevant terminology is defined in Terminology D996.
