D2835-89 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📋 Scope and Composition

ASTM D2835 – 89 (Reapproved 2017) covers a polychloroprene-based lubricant formulated to facilitate the insertion and positioning of preformed elastomeric compression seals in concrete pavement joints. The lubricant must contain soluble phenolic resins blended with antioxidants and acid acceptors in a mixture of organic solvents. Performance is validated through specific criteria including solids content, homogeneity, consistency, and drying rate.

💡 Technical Note: The polychloroprene base ensures chemical compatibility with the elastomeric seal material, preventing degradation and providing the necessary slip for proper seal installation.

⚙️ Performance Requirements and Classification

The standard defines two viscosity types for the lubricant based on application method. Compliance with these limits is verified according to referenced ASTM test methods.

🟦 Requirement 📏 Specification Limit 🎯 Type
Homogeneity Uniform, no lumps or agglomerates Visual
Nonvolatile Content ≥ 24.0 weight % ASTM D1644
Viscosity (Type I) 3,000 – 8,000 cP Hand or Machine
Viscosity (Type II) 8,000 – 15,000 cP Machine only
Drying Rate (8 min) Bond separation < 10 s 50-g shear load
Drying Rate (20 min) Bond stays > 10 s 50-g shear load

The drying rate test establishes the working open time for installers. A bond prepared after an 8-minute drying period must separate completely in less than 10 seconds under a 50-gram shear load. A bond prepared after a 20-minute drying period must remain unseparated for a minimum of 10 seconds under the same load, ensuring sufficient tack for positioning.

⚡ Application Safety: This lubricant contains organic solvents. Adequate ventilation is crucial during application. The standard emphasizes
