D2792-17 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Specimen Geometry and Preparation

ASTM D2792-17 specifies a laboratory procedure requiring precise test substrate and coating dimensions to ensure reproducible results. The substrate consists of bright tin plates with tightly controlled mass and size parameters.

⬛ Parameter 📏 Specification
Panel Material Bright Tin Plate
Panel Weight per Area 19 g/dm² to 25 g/dm²
Panel Dimensions 75 mm × 130 mm (approx. 3 in. × 5 in.)
Wet Film Thickness Options 76 µm (3 mil) or 142 µm (6 mil)
Required Replicates Minimum of 3 panels per paint tested
💡 Preparation Tip: Thoroughly clean the tin panels with a suitable solvent and buff them lightly with fine steel wool prior to coating to ensure proper adhesion and uniform film application.

⚙️ Test Procedure and Exposure Parameters

The test paint must be examined for skins, stirred thoroughly to loosen settled pigment, and drawn down onto the prepared panels using a film applicator set to the specified wet film thickness. The coated panels are then air-dried for the time specified by the purchaser, which is typically 90 hours. Following the drying period, the panels are immersed to half their length in a covered glass beaker containing the selected hydrocarbon test fluid. A separate beaker must be used for each paint tested.

🟦 Fluid Type 📄 Standard Reference 🌡️ Immersion Temperature
Type I Reference Fuel A (Fed. Spec. TT-S-735, ASTM D471) 21 °C to 32 °C (70 °F to 90 °F)
Type III Reference Fuel B (Fed. Spec. TT-S-735, ASTM D471) 21 °C to 32 °C (70 °F to 90 °F)
⚠️ Critical Safety Alert: Hydrocarbon test fluids are highly flammable and volatile. Always use a covered beaker and conduct the immersion procedure in a well-ventilated area or fume hood following all applicable safety, health, and environmental regulations.
