ASTM D2792-17 specifies a laboratory procedure requiring precise test substrate and coating dimensions to ensure reproducible results. The substrate consists of bright tin plates with tightly controlled mass and size parameters.
| ⬛ Parameter | 📏 Specification |
|---|---|
| Panel Material | Bright Tin Plate |
| Panel Weight per Area | 19 g/dm² to 25 g/dm² |
| Panel Dimensions | 75 mm × 130 mm (approx. 3 in. × 5 in.) |
| Wet Film Thickness Options | 76 µm (3 mil) or 142 µm (6 mil) |
| Required Replicates | Minimum of 3 panels per paint tested |
The test paint must be examined for skins, stirred thoroughly to loosen settled pigment, and drawn down onto the prepared panels using a film applicator set to the specified wet film thickness. The coated panels are then air-dried for the time specified by the purchaser, which is typically 90 hours. Following the drying period, the panels are immersed to half their length in a covered glass beaker containing the selected hydrocarbon test fluid. A separate beaker must be used for each paint tested.
