D2754-10 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Tape Types and Grades

This specification defines two types of high-temperature glass cloth pressure-sensitive electrical insulating tape. Type I is woven glass cloth with silicone adhesive, available in Grade A (0.18 mm) and Grade B (0.25 mm). Type II is PTFE-impregnated woven glass cloth with silicone adhesive at 0.13 mm nominal thickness.

🟦 Type📏 Description🎯 Thickness
Type I Grade AWoven glass cloth with silicone adhesive0.18 mm (0.007 in)
Type I Grade BWoven glass cloth with silicone adhesive0.25 mm (0.010 in)
Type IIPTFE-impregnated woven glass cloth with silicone adhesive0.13 mm (0.005 in)

The tape backing consists of woven glass fibers. The silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive coating must be smooth and uniform, free from lumps and bare spots, and shall not transfer when the tape is unwound from the roll.

⚙️ Physical Requirements and Test Methods

All tapes must meet the requirements listed in Table 1 of the standard for their respective types. Testing is conducted in accordance with Test Methods D1000, which specifies procedures for roll selection, conditioning, and measurement of properties such as thickness, adhesion, and dielectric strength.

If any roll fails to meet requirements, two additional rolls from the same lot are selected and tested. Should one of these two also fail, the lot may be rejected at the purchaser’s discretion.

Always refer to the latest version of ASTM D2754 for complete Table 1 values. Proper conditioning of samples per D1000 ensures repeatable test results.

Standard lengths are 6 m (20 ft), 20 m (66 ft), and 33 m (108 ft). Widths exceeding 50 mm require agreement between purchaser and seller. Nonstandard width and length combinations are permissible by mutual consent.

Packaging must provide adequate protection against damage, and rolls should not adhere to each other or the container. Each package is marked with the manufacturer’s name, ASTM designation, tape type, width, and length.

Ensure proper storage conditions to maintain adhesive properties. Do not expose tapes to extreme temperatures or humidity before use.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🔍 Question: What distinguishes Type I from Type II tape?

Answer: Type I uses woven glass cloth with silicone adhesive, while Type II incorporates PTFE impregnation for enhanced thermal and chemical resistance, with a thinner profile.

💡 Question: How are properties tested for compliance?

Answer: All tests follow ASTM D1000, including conditioning at standard laboratory conditions. Key tests include thickness, adhesion to steel, tensile strength, and dielectric breakdown.

Question: Can I order tapes in custom dimensions?

Answer: Yes, nonstandard widths and lengths are available if agreed between the purchaser and the seller.

📌 Question: What happens if a roll fails inspection?

Answer: Two additional rolls from the same lot are tested. If either fails, the entire lot may be rejected at the buyer’s option.
