This standard test method covers the quantitative determination of the knock rating of liquid spark-ignition engine fuel in terms of Research Octane Number (O.N.), including fuels containing up to 25% v/v ethanol. The method utilizes a standardized single-cylinder, four-stroke cycle, variable compression ratio, carbureted CFR engine operated under defined conditions. The O.N. scale is defined by the volumetric composition of Primary Reference Fuel (PRF) blends, and the sample fuel’s knock intensity is compared to that of one or more PRF blends to determine its Research O.N.
The O.N. scale ranges from 0 to 120 octane number, but the test method has a working range from 40 to 120 Research O.N. Typical commercial spark-ignition engine fuels rate between 88 and 101 Research O.N. The values of operating conditions are stated in SI units and are considered standard, with historical inch-pound units in parentheses.
The CFR engine is the primary equipment used in this test method. It features a single cylinder, four-stroke cycle, variable compression ratio, and a carburetor. The engine is run in accordance with a defined set of operating conditions to measure the knock intensity of the sample fuel. The knock intensity is compared to that of Primary Reference Fuel (PRF) blends, which define the octane number scale. The PRF blend that matches the knock intensity of the sample fuel establishes the Research Octane Number.
This test method is applicable for ratings across the entire Research O.N. range, with typical commercial fuels in the 88 to 101 range. However, it may not be applicable to fuel and fuel components that are primarily oxygenates, except for ethanol up to 25% v/v.
The standard references several ASTM documents for specific procedures and specifications. Below is a table of key referenced standards.
