D2692 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Test Method Overview and Purpose

The ASTM D2692/D2692M−15 standard provides a definitive procedure for measuring longitudinal air permeability in tire fabrics, tire cord fabrics, tire cords, and yarns when embedded in a cured rubber compound. This test method is specifically designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of wickproof treatments intended to prevent air from traveling along the axis of the yarn. It is considered satisfactory for the acceptance testing of commercial shipments and for routine quality control applications.

This test method is applicable to fabrics made from all types of fibers combined with all types of rubber compounds. The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard, as they are not exact equivalents.

⚡ Caution: Combining values from the two unit systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. Users of this standard must establish appropriate safety and health practices prior to use.

⚙️ Test Procedure and Result Interpretation

The core procedure involves embedding fabric specimens in a standard rubber compound as defined by Practice D3182. Following vulcanization, the yarn ends are freshly exposed on both sides of the cured rubber panel. Air pressure is then applied to the yarn ends on one side of the panel, while a detergent solution is applied to the opposite ends. Air permeability is indicated by the continuous formation of air bubbles in the detergent solution.
