D2664-04 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Specimen Geometry and Preparation

Per ASTM D2664-04, this test method is strictly applicable to cylindrical rock core specimens tested in an undrained state. Specimen preparation is governed by Practice D4543, which mandates specific dimensional tolerances to minimize end effects and ensure uniform stress distribution. The specimen length-to-diameter ratio should ideally fall between 2.0 and 2.5, with ends machined perfectly flat.

🛠️ Dimensional Tolerance 📏 Specified Limit (SI Units Standard)
Diameter Deviation along Length ± 0.25 mm (0.01 in)
End Flatness 0.025 mm (0.001 in)
Angle of End Face to Axis 0.001 mm/mm (0.001 in/in)

⚙️ Test Procedure and Loading Conditions

The prepared specimen is placed within a triaxial loading chamber and isolated from the confining fluid. A predetermined conf
